PETER J. LOTSIKAS, DVM

Dr. Peter Lotsikas is a native of Montgomery County, Maryland. He graduated with a BS degree in Biology from Virginia Tech and a DVM degree from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. He then completed a general small animal internship at Kansas State University, followed by a surgical internship at the prestigious Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center. Dr. Lotsikas received his formal surgical residency training at Iowa State University and is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgery.

 

Dr. Lotsikas has advanced training in orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, and surgical oncology. During his residency, Dr. Lotsikas was involved in the Orthopedic Research Laboratory at Iowa State University, which has produced some of the most cited research literature on canine cruciate disease and elbow dysplasia. The first total elbow replacement procedure was developed at Iowa State University during his training period, and he served as a teaching assistant during several of the BioMedtrix™ Total Elbow Certification Courses. Dr. Lotsikas conducted clinical research involving external skeletal fixation and has served as a laboratory-teaching assistant during the IMEX™ Complete Course in External Skeletal Fixation. Dr. Lotsikas is also certified to perform the TPLO for cruciate repair, Sliding Humeral Osteotomy procedure for elbow dysplasia, and in regenerative stem cell therapy in conjunction with Vet Stem™.

 

Dr. Lotsikas serves as a clinical instructor for Arthrex Vet Systems™ and Innovative Vet Products™ on TightRope stablization of the knee and arthroscopy of the elbow and shoulder joints. He also developed the technique guide of using the TightRope System for stabilization of trauma hip luxations. Dr. Lotsikas is a contributing author for Clean Run Magazine, Pointing Dog Journal, Retriever Journal, and Just Labs Magazine on sports related injuries in the canine athlete.

 

In addition to leading the hip replacement program at VOSM, Dr. Lotsikas has gained a reputation for his ability to repair difficult fractures and congenital limb deformities. He also performs advanced surgical oncology procedures including limb spare with endoprosthesis.

 

Most importantly, Dr. Lotsikas prides himself on tailoring his surgical and medical recommendations to meet the needs of his diverse patient population. Whether it is an elite athlete or an aging companion, Dr. Lotsikas focuses on getting to know each individual patient and follows their progress throughout treatment and recovery.

 

Dr. Lotsikas is married and has three young daughters. Peter's wife, Faith, also a veterinarian, is a certified canine rehabilitation therapist. They have two dogs and two cats. His personal interests include fishing, hunting, golf, and horseback riding.
