VOSM Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation Fellowship
VOSM is accepting applications for a Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Fellowship under the guidance of two board-certified surgeons, including one Diplomate of the American College of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, and CCRT/CCRP veterinarians. The program is directed towards veterinarians who already hold a CCRP or CCRT and have at least one year of post-graduate clinical experience in a rotating internship or other clinical environment. As such, this program is designed to serve the successful applicant as a sub-residency, and enhance their qualifications and competitiveness for subsequent application to formal residency programs or other career opportunities. The program places a strong emphasis on didactic training (surgical rounds, journal club, rehabilitation rounds) as well as support for clinical research.
VOSM was established in 2005 to provide the highest quality veterinary orthopedic surgery and rehabilitative care available. The country’s premier orthopedic, sports medicine and rehabilitation center, VOSM possesses an unmatched combination of specialized staff:

Our referral base spans the mid-Atlantic region and we routinely receive referrals from well outside our proximate area, including referrals from universities. More than 35% of our caseload is from outside the state. In the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, we have become the provider-of-choice for veterinarians looking for their own pets’ treatment and frequently receive referrals from other boarded surgeons and specialists in the area. Our caseload also includes a major emphasis on working dogs and canine athletes.
Our 16,000 square foot facility is equipped with state-of-the-art veterinary orthopedic and rehabilitative equipment. Additionally, we perform elective neurosurgeries, have integrated limb sparing with fiber-resin prosthetics, frequently utilize custom stifle braces, etc., and have access to local MRI and CT. We also utilize an objective gait analysis system, a canine gym, underwater treadmills and a resistance pool. The diversity of our orthopedic and sports medicine caseload is arguably the best in the country, as are the resources and tools we have available for you to use in treating patients.
The Program...
One goal of this Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Fellowship is preparation for a Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation residency and scientific writing is an important criterion for acceptance into most programs. In order to maximize chances of acceptance into an ACVSMR residency, we require that the intern prepares and submits a manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal. To help ensure success in this area, we have current research projects available for the Fellow to begin working on immediately. Depending on rehabilitation skills and preparation for cases, the Fellow will have some primary case responsibilities and will be able to provide therapeutic services his or herself. Our caseload is near 100% orthopedic and neurologic with a heavy emphasis on minimally invasive surgery utilizing arthroscopy and fluoroscopy. The Fellow will also have the ability to rotate through the surgery department as well as work with our veterinary sports specific trainer and the regenerative medicine team at Virginia Tech’s Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center.
Compensation and Benefits...
Fellow compensation includes a salary, health care coverage, liability insurance, AVMA dues, and dues to the Maryland VMA. The Fellow will be provided with a dedicated workspace and computer. There is also an on-site staff gym available for the Fellow to use.
Attendance at Continuing Education meetings is encouraged and will be supported by sending the intern to a relevant annual conference with paid registration and a stipend of $600 to help defray travel, lodging, and meal costs. The Fellow will have 8 days off for paid vacation during the year with scheduling approved by the Operations Manager. If needed, an additional 3 days will be provided for the Fellow to travel to interviews for residency programs for the next year.
