Orthopedic Surgery > Neurosurgery

Neurosurgery includes the diagnosis, treatment, care and rehabilitation for disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system.  Some conditions involving neurosurgical treatment include:

- Wobblers Disease - Wobbler’s is the  compression of the spinal cord in the neck region.  With this disease, there are abnormalities in the structure of the vertebrae, of the ligaments that connect them, and/or of the disks between them. The results of this compression of the spinal cord in the neck area are weakness and loss of coordination in all four legs; hence the name wobbler.

- Intervertebral Disc Disease - Intrevertebral disc disease is the herniation or rupturing of a spinal disc due to weakening caused by age or trauma.

- Spinal Fractures - Spinal fractures are breaks in the spinal bone due to trauma or other underlying pathology.  Because the spinal cord is located within the spinal canal, a fracture of this bone can include severe consequences such as complete paralysis.

- Lumbosacral Disease- Lumbosacral disease is caused by the compression of the nerve roots in the lumbosacral spinal canal in the lower back region.  This disease is often difficult to diagnose as the clinical signs of this disease mimic a number of pelvic limb musculoskeletal conditions.  Most dogs affected by lumbosacral disease are middle aged or older large, athletic breeds.
