Orthopedic Surgery > Treatment of Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease, is a condition in which inflammation results in joint pain, caused by wearing of the cartilage that covers and acts as a cushion inside joints. Because bone surfaces become less protected by cartilage, patients experience pain upon weight bearing, including walking and standing. Decreased movement due to the pain causes regional muscles to weaken, and ligaments may become more lax.

- Arthroscopic treatments - Treatment involves a physical examination of the interior of a joint using an arthroscope, a type of endoscope that is inserted into the joint through a small incision. These arthroscopic procedures are performed to evaluate or treat many orthopedic conditions.
